Datar Malwani Masala is a typical traditional spice mix used in western coastal part of Maharashtra (India), especially in Malwan, Goa, South Konkan and Raigad districts for preparing vegetables, sprouts (usal), mutton curry and chicken curry.

CHICKEN CURRY (MALWANI STYLE)

INGREDIENTS :

Datar Malwani Masala Spice Mix: 3 tablespoons
Chicken Pieces: 1 kg
Chopped Onion: 2 (125 grams)
Fresh Grated Coconut: 2 cups (200 grams)
Chopped Tomato: 2 (150 grams)
Coriander Leaves: 10 grams
Vegetable Oil: 3 tablespoons
Water: 2 cups (500 ml)
Datar Salt: as per taste

METHOD OF PREPARATION :

  • In a bowl marinate the chicken pieces, with garlic and ginger paste for one hour.
  • In a pan, fry grated coconut for 2 minutes on low flame.
  • Add the fried grated coconut, Datar Malwani Masala and chopped onion in a mixer for one minute and keep aside.
  • In a pan, heat oil on a low flame and add the marinated chicken. Fry for 5 minutes.
  • Add the prepared masala, 2 cups of water, Datar Salt and cook the chicken until it becomes tender.
